New Feature Work: Cash Expense Tracking
(pathTags: dateCr:20080402 blogId:.eff0c46 status:published blogTag:cash%20tracking%20features)
All, We're currently working on some new features that we hope to get out over the next couple of months. Here's what's in the works right now (and we'd love you feedback or suggestions on how to build these pieces):

- Cash Expense Tracking (Ability to track your cash transactions and have them included in your overall cash spending)

- More mobile/email alerts and notifications, such as low balance alerts, bank overdraft alerts, high credit card limit alerts, and high transaction amount alerts

- Ability to export data from the product to a spreadsheet

Additionally, I know that budgeting has been asked about by a number of you. We are definitely working on budgeting, but we are building it as part of a larger set of features. It's something we're working on, and we appreciate your patience because we hope to deliver it as a feature that exceeds your expectations.

Thanks, Barron Quicken Online Product Manager

I am very interested in the cash tracking. With the economy in the shape it is, our family is trying to ween off of the blind debit card spending. Rather we take out $200 per week for my wife to use for expenses. Any left over goes in the safe for cash on hand surplus. The drawback is not having automatic entries in Quicken, but it should help us budget better. I just hope that the cash tracking will let you start with the ATM withdrawal (auto generated in Quicken transactions) and then cut that up by adding sub-rows and specifying where the money was spent (using pull downs, catagories, etc.). Please let us know when this is available.

Oops, forgot to mention one other thing in terms of new features/improvements ... would love for Quicken to bundle up and interface all of their products. We use TurboTax every year -- would be great if Quicken Online could interface directly with TurboTax and even give you a current projected tax snapshot at any given time throughout the year. Also, it would be nice to be able to access the storage product from the same spot as well. I personally would love to make Quicken.com my alternate hard drive and one-stop spot for all my important files and data. It's a little scary in terms of security, but it would be convenient beyond belief (esp. when we change computers, go on vacation, etc.).

Ability to export to Excel would be awesome! Not exactly sure how cash tracking would work but not something I'm particularly concerned about, I don't think. What's cash anyway? LOL We use plastic or checks for everything we possibly can. Although new features are awesome, would really like to see the bugs worked out of the existing features as a higher priority.

it seems like the ability to track cash expenditures would go nicely with the ability to split a transaction into multiple categories, or sub-transactions. For example, you could have the parent transaction be "atm withdraw", and then inside that have multiple items that you spent that cash on, that you could put into different categories. This would also work in the case if you bought a couple of items at the store, say a TV and a dishwasher, and wanted to put the TV under Entertainment and the dishwasher under Appliance or something.

It seems it would be a natural to allow Quicken online to download to regular Quicken. I would definitely use both projects, especially if I could use cash transactions and add stock, retirment accounts etc. Quckin online would save a lot of time.

Could you also add asset accounts like real estate (your home), so you can get a better sense of your net worth? Matt

Is "Cash Expense Tracking" the same as having a cash account in Quicken desktop? That's one of the features I need before I can switch to Quicken Online.

Again - thanks for the feedback from everyone. For this coming feature, we're just giving the ability to make sure you can track your cash transactions as part of your overall spending. Once we launch it, we'd love you to try it and let us know how we can improve it.

I tried using Quicken Online and the following missing features made it a deal breaker: Split transactions, detailed expense category reporting. Zach

barronernst, I am happy to hear you all are interested in community feature feedback. I have made suggestions to other large companies with no luck. However, in the past when using Quicken 2007, I found an undocumented bug and was happy to see it fixed in the update. You wouldn't by any chance be looking to hire part time a poor Ph.D. student who could use extra money on the side to implement said feature. =) I figure it doesn't hurt to ask. Michael

LegoManic, That along the same idea (coffee can cash/enveloping) I was suggesting. Hopefully, more people will request it.

I'd like to have track more than one cash account. For example, I tuck some cash away for unexpected emergencies (coffee can cash). I want to track this account separate from cash spent for parking, baby sitter, tooth fairy, etc (wallet cash).

The lack of export features may prevent me from continuing my trial. The inability to get data out of the application is a significant weakness. The loss of data control prevents broader SaaS application adoption.

Thanks for the feedback Balazs - keep it coming.

I don't know about anyone else, but I would love an envelope/ear marking feature. Where I can say that, I have put away this much money away for vacation or towards a new TV this year. Thanks!
