This post is about: Quicken Starter Edition 2008
I have 2005 on my old computer and bought 2008 starter edition for my new computer. I tried uploading my back up file from 2005 version into my 2008 Starter Edition. They will not read over version Quicken files. What do I do to to transfer 2005 files to my new edition 2008?

The Starter Edition of Quicken will not convert files from older versions only START a new file. You need to either buy the Deluxe version or get someone with 2008 to convert your file.

"I Dugg your post as a public service ...."

It's hardly a public service to post false statements.

In the referenced link, you (i assume it was you) say that "every previous version" of Quicken would convert data from earlier versions.  Your statement is false.

In years prior to 2008, the least expensive Quicken version was known as the "New User" version (in 2008, it has been renamed to the "Starter Edition).  The old "New User" version would NOT convert files from previous versions of Quicken.

I have always bought the cheapest version, formerly the "Basic" version. they have always converted the older version data.

Perhaps Intuit had some versions they shipped with new PC's or something that were even more stripped down than "Basic", but basic implies something, doesn't it?

Anyway, they got what they wanted from me. I payed the extra $30 to unlock the deluxe version.

    Cheers,

Basic wasn't the cheapest version: "New User" was.

    Do ya think?

Also available at eBay - cheap(est).

I have the same question about installing 2008 home and business over 2006 Quicken basic...when it asked about uninstalling my 2006 Quicken does that mean that I will lose all of my banking information???

I think it is only a problem if you bought the 2008 entry version, called Starter this year, Basic in prior years.

For the record, I ponied up the extra $30 to get the Deluxe (!?) version. Reminds me of the old Holy Grail album's "Deluxe Version."

    Cheers,

" ... if you bought the 2008 entry version, called Starter this year, Basic in prior years."

    This is not correct.

The Q2008 version called "Starter Edition" is the equivalent of prior years versions known as "New User Edition".

The Quicken version known as "Basic", which existed for many years, was discontinued for Q2008.

    give it up, man.

Speaking as a former Basic user, John's comments are a correct statement of FACT. I think it is imperative that mis-statements be corrected for the record here in this forum.

Consider the user looking to upgrade and considering purchasing a copy of Basic - say 06 or 07. That user would be incorrectly steered away from purchasing Basic after reading your post.

    Don't take it personal, man!!

I'm having the 2005 to 2008 problem. My 2005 is "Quicken Basic" and I just purchased "Quicken 2008 Starter Edition". Do you know how to convert?
    Thanks!

Can't be done.  The Starter Edition is for new users only and will not convert your data from a previous version.

You need to purchase Quicken 2008 Deluxe, at a minimum, to convert your current data.

I bought Quicken Deluxe, downloaded together with Quicken WillMaker Plus, for $39.99 in accordance with Quicken's printed ad and a "Quicken Upgrade CD: Deluxe/Premier/H&B" they sent by mail. The ad also says "Quicken 2008 automatically reads your existing data file." But I can't get my data from Quicken 2005 to upload to 2008 Deluxe.

But I can't get my data from Quicken 2005 to upload to 2008 Deluxe.

Not a specific enough response.  Where is your Quicken 2005 data located?  What operating system are you using?  What happens when you try to FILE>OPEN the Quicken 2005 data?  Do you receive an error message?

    Please provide more info.
