Vista Workaround

STEP 1:
Download and install these files from Microsoft in this order, then install MEM. We suggest that you download the files to your desktop so that they are easy to find.

NOTE: Proceed to Step 2 if you have already installed all three .NET files and Quicken Medical Expense Manager (MEM).

  • ****************************************

Download and install the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package.
Skip this file and continue with the next .NET file if you already tried to install MEM on Vista and saw this InstallShield error:

1155: Error installing Microsoft(R) .NET Framework.
    File 1033dotnetfxSp1.exe not found

    File Name: dotnetfx.exe
    File Size: 23.1 MB

Download and install the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.

    File Size: 10.2 MB
  • ********************************************

Download and install the ASP.NET Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.

    URL: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8ec6fb8a-29eb-49cf-9dbc-1a0dc2273ff9&DisplayLang=en

    File Name: NDP1.1sp1-KB886903-X86.exe
    File Size: 1.5 MB
  • *********************************************

Install Quicken Medical Expense Manager (MEM) v.2.0 or v2.1.

    STEP 2:
    a. Right click on the MEM desktop icon

    b. Select "Run as Administrator"

    c. Double click on MEM desktop icon to launch the program.

If MEM opens without errors, do the following:

    a. Right click on the MEM desktop icon and select “Properties”.

    b. Select the "Compatibility" tab.

    c. Place a check in the box next to "Run program as administrator".

    d. Click on "Apply" then "OK".

    Reboot your PC

If you see the error: "Couldn't get process information from the remote machine.", then continue to step 3.

    STEP 3:
    a. Go to C:\Program Files\Quicken Medical Expense Manager
(Open My Computer > Local Disk (C:) >Program Files > Quicken Medical Expense Manager.)

You should see the file "MemDesktop ToolApp.exe" in the Quicken Medical Expense Manager folder.

    b. Right click on "MemDesktop ToolApp.exe" and select “Properties”.

    c. Select the "Compatibility" tab.

    d. Place a check in the box next to "Run program as administrator".

    e. Click on "Apply" then "OK".

    f. Close all applications and reboot.

STEP 4: This step is for the window that appears and asks you to “ALLOW” MEM to run.

    a. Go to your Control Panel.

    b. Select “User Accounts”.

    c. Select “Turn User Account Control on or off”.

    d. Remove the check in the box next to “Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer”. Then click on “OK”.

    e. Restart your PC.

This really is a fix. It solved all of the installation problems that were plaguing MEM.
One thing I would add is that this worked after uninstalling .Net Framework 1.1 and MEM and then following the steps outlined in the workaround

I'm running Vista in a virtual machine (using Parallels software) under Mac OSX Leopard. I've installed all the .NET stuff, but the app still wouldn't launch. I tried changing the compatibility mode, but I can't because I get a message saying the app is on a network drive. I assume that has something to do with running in a VM.

I've been a MEM user since the 1.0 product was in beta; however, it has been running on a different machine (Win XP). I'm now trying to migrate to a Mac. Unfortunately, a few key apps (like MEM) only run on Windows, that's why I'm using Parallels. Quicken 2008 is running fine under Parallels, so I am wondering whether my issues are the result of trying to reinstall MEM after copying onto a CD from my old PC and then copying it off the CD onto my Mac. I don't have the media, since I downloaded the 2.x upgrade from the web.

Is there something you can do for me?

    Thanks

THANK YOU! I spent the entire afternoon trying to get QMEM to open. Now that it is, I have another problem, but this fix really did work. I was about to crumble, as I have a family of 10, and we've generated over 600 EOB's already this year. Thanks!
