As y'all may or may not have noticed, either directly or through others' posts, the forums have been somewhat untrustworthy of late. I've been spending some time keeping track of the Forum and Support Site Feedback and Suggestions forum in the Quicken for Windows area to keep tabs on what others are experiencing. If you are not familiar with this forum, it's worth a look.
However, that's not the purpose of my post. It seems that in recent days a new forum has been started called Forum Announcements which seems to be a forum about the forums, but independant of any of the Quicken programs. What I'm trying to figure out is whether or not this area is intended to be and/or develop into a discussion area, or if it is designed to be a one-way announcement channel from the forum administrators to us.
For my part, I like the idea of having an area to discuss things concerning these forums and other issues beyond the scope of any given specific Quicken product. But I'm just not sure what the specific intent of this new area may be. Thoughts?
Since it's actually named "Forum Announcements", I kinda figured it's one-way --- TO us.

THINK IT THRU! Have you explained your issue so that someone who knows nothing about you, or YOUR Quicken setup, can understand what your issue is? Are you using standard Quicken terminology, particularly with respect to FILES, ACCOUNTS and CATEGORIES?
Of course, this announcements forum was intended so newly fixed (or broken) features of the forum could get to you immediately in this time of upheaval--you can reply to these posts of course, but if you have something new to say, it's best put here, to keep the annoucements paramount--

Hello folks! Several items that I’ve been wanting to pass along…
Yes, the forums are a bit messed up, technically. “Recent Topics” and “Last Post” aren’t always correct, and because “Watch forums” keeps getting reset, one doesn’t always get an e-mail when there are new posts. All of these combined can make it challenging to stay on top of the forums. Sorry about this. We’re working with the vendor on it. (By the way, I’m planning to move several V1->V2 threads into Legacy, but I’m waiting because there’s enough confusion at the moment.)
Some people have asked about how I interact with the forums. Here’s my thinking: The forums are primarily a user-to-user place, where MEM users can help each other… both with MEM-specific issues (how do I <url= http://www.quickenforums.com/thread.jspa?messageID=500003838&tstart=0>archive information by year</url>), and with related issues that aren’t all about MEM (e.g. <url=http://www.quickenforums.com/thread.jspa?threadID=600005080&start=0&tstart=0> How do y'all file your medical papers?</url>). Medical expenses are a nasty can of worms and most of us have had to learn how to deal with them on our own – I hope the MEM forums are a place where we can help each other with this, at least a little.
With that in mind, I think my role is not to chime in on every question or comment. Meg and Antonio and I keep an eye on things, but we restrain ourselves from commenting too much. When most of the Recent Topic/Last Posts have “Q’s” next to them, I don’t think it’s healthy. (When Recent Topics are working, that is…)
This means... Meg and Antonio and I try not to respond if we don’t have something useful to say. If there’s a complaint about a bug and we’ve already responded, we might not repeat ourselves. If there’s a suggestion for a feature, we might say to ourselves, “Wow, that’s a really good idea, let’s figure out how we can do that for Version X”, but maybe without saying as much in the forums. If there’s a discussion that seems to be ticking along OK without us, we’ll let it tick along without us. (And in the last few weeks, it’s even possible that we haven’t seen a given post, due to the technical issues.) We might, however, post a topic (such as <url= http://www.quickenforums.com/thread.jspa?forumID=1023&threadID=600007742&messageID=600040640>Has anyone found any billing errors? </url>) to see what people think.
“Meg”? Oh, right – please let me introduce Quicken Meg!! She’s focusing mainly on support with Antonio.
A couple requests of people posting in these forums.
(A) Please don’t post anything too personal about yourself, that might identify you. These forums are public.* (It was due to concerns about this that <url=http://www.quickenforums.com/thread.jspa?messageID=600040983&tstart=0#600040983>a post</url> was recently deleted before being restored.)
(B) Please don’t post too many external URLs. According to the <url=http://www.quickenforums.com/help.jspa?mode=standards> Terms of Use</url>, Intuit’s not responsible for external links, of course, but these forums could get junked up very quickly if there were a lot of advertising-type links or things that were way off topic. So far, it’s been good (knock on wood). And for that matter, if you see something in the forums that looks “wrong”, if you’re logged in you can click on the Report link in the upper right of the post.
As you may have noticed, our style’s pretty informal. We’re all here for pretty much the same reasons and dealing with similar problems, and a lack of formality hopefully makes it easier to communicate. Please take it easy on each other when there’s a disagreement. Please feel free to disagree with each other (!) but let’s not get personal. Also, don't jump to the conclusion that someone else is getting personal, they may not have meant to.
By the way, I’ve noticed from time to time somebody coming in as an instant expert, making a single post or two, then disappearing into the night, so to speak. (The guy making waves about the need for third-party encryption comes to mind.) Not sure what to say about this.
We have a new in-forum e-mail system. It’s very easy to send a message: just click on the person’s username (e.g. Quicken Bruce), then click on “Send Message to Member” near the top of their Profile. It’s much less easy to notice if you’ve been sent a message, however: there’s a little starred envelope near your username (“Welcome, (your username)”).
I will try to remember to check mine. :)
Your thoughts on any of this???
In closing -- Happy Easter! Happy spring break! Happy sun! (A little goes a long way.) (And those of you in the Sun Belt can keep your comments to yourselves, thank you very much.)
Regards,
Bruce
A little example of how public these forums are – I went to Google to search on “FSA AND mileage”, and the first result was from these forums. :)
Quicken Bruce, thanks for the forum details. I'm pleased to see that the technical problems are being addressed. I probably post less frequently that I would like ... simply because it's pretty hard to track the threads. Good luck with the fix.
Your point to play will with others is certainly valid and I promise to be nice an share the playground swing. ;-)
I like the in-forum e-mail concept ... but alas, no starred envelope next to my user name. Maybe a message will show up one of these days. :-)
Is the starred envelope the only notification? Some forum software supports regular e-mail notification of private forum messages similar to notification concerning watched threads.
There's a minor issue that will affect a few of you, when contacting Support?
If you've set up your Support account with a username other than your e-mail address, you may have experienced difficulty reaching Support. We're in the process of fixing this and if you're one of the few impacted, you will be receiving an e-mail notification from us. There will be nothing for you to do. The e-mail will let you when your account has been fixed. After that, you should be able to contact Support using your e-mail address without a hitch.
Sorry for any confusion.
(And if you have any questions about this, please click on my name at the left, and "Send Message to Member" to send me an in-forum e-mail, which I check at least every few days.)
Does this have anything to do with the email notification that I used to get when the forums were updated (any discussion on the QMEM boards)? I haven't gotten any notifications except for 1 or 2 in several months. I have my preferences set to send me notices. Any suggestions?
This is specifically about people contacting Support with questions.
What you're talking about is the "watch forums" feature, which has been blinking on and off for months.
X-(
(Grumpy at vendor, not grumpy at you, of course.)
The "watch forums" feature hasn't been dependable for some time. What I do instead is check Recent Topics regularly (and that functionality is now working dependably). Half a cheer for that.
