Quicken is a great product, and I hope the development team listens to this feedback, so they don't lose business to competitors who will gladly fill the gap they've left.

The purpose of having Quicken on a mobile device is to habitually enter transactions as they happen (not forget to do later) and thus always know your true balance. Also, to consult your budget when considering purchases. Quicken online for iPhone fails on both points.

First, there is no option to refresh accounts in the iPhone version.

Second, if I want to add a transaction as it happens, it requires me to load the site, enter my username and password, wait for the next page, confirm my bank, wait for next page, click on Add Transaction, wait again, finally add the transaction, and wait for it to save. Not very convenient, especially when people are behind you in line or when making a series of small purchases. Ideally, I should be able to click an iPhone icon that instantly takes me to an Add Transaction window with no need to log in.

Third, no budgeting.

Potential solutions:

Automatically refresh accounts if user has not already logged in that day. Competing products do this.

Remember my username with a cookie, and create an optional home page that combines an Add Transaction and password request form together. The home page could have a drop down menu of accounts, or there could be a separate home page per account for this (most transactions are same account).

Create a native app for iPhone (and Blackberry friends, too) that logs new transactions into server automatically, if not necessary account balance requests.

Enable budgeting.

I am palm/pocket quicken user who is dying to move to the iphone but WILL NOT until pocket quicken is released for the iphone.

I too want to "habitually enter transactions as they happen" not wait until they are updated at night.

With PocketQuicken... it turn on the palm (the PIN screen appears if I was last using PocketQuicken)... type in my PIN and immediately am entering my transaction just like I would inside desktop Quicken.

Every few days (or few weeks sometimes)... I sync with my desktop quicken.

BIGGEST CONCERN OF ALL... PLEASE READ THIS... I have been using desktop quicken for 17 years (since 1991). I have thousands and thousands of transaction history in my quicken file. It is a history that lets me look back over YEARS of financial decisions and purchases. Whatever you come up with must keep that available to me just like pocketquicken does. I DON'T WANT or NEED ONLINE ACCESS... I purchased a mobile device to be able to keep that information (or portions of it) availabe to me whether I have internet access or not. I don't want to be limited by internet availability went I want to see this information... whether on my mobile device or my desktop.

PUT MY VOTE DOWN FOR JUST CREATING AN IPHONE VERSION OF POCKET QUICKEN.... YOU DON'T NEED TO ADD ANY NEW BELLS OR WHISTLES.... just make it work like it does on a palm pilot and I will for out $99 to buy the software and I can finally pitch my palm pilot, phone and GPS out the window.

MAKE POCKET QUICKEN FOR THE IPHONE!!!!!

I would also add that if some other company comes out with a iphone mobile product that has a "parent" desktop application that lets me keep my 17 years of quicken transaction history... I WILL MOVE TO IT in order to move from the palm to the iphone.

So I agree with other posts here... WHY NOT KEEP US UPDATED ABOUT WHAT IS IN THE WORKS???

I completely agree with KyleKoehler. When buying a mobile phone last year, I chose a Windows Smartphone so that I could continue using Pocket Quicken, which I used on my Palm device before that. I've been a Quicken user for over a decade, so I have lots of existing data, and I'm not interested in Quicken Online on a computer or on a phone. The lack of Pocket Quicken on the iPhone is the only reason I don't have an iPhone.

I agree with all of the long time desktop Quicken/PocketQuicken users who won't switch to an iPhone without a true conduit between phone and desktop, and will not commit years of historical financial data to a website. Honestly, I don't care how slick Quicken online becomes. I prefer having my financial data on my PC, rather than on a website that could be hacked.

So please, Intuit or Landware developers, give us an iPhone widget that will act just like PocketQuicken, and allow us to keep our desktop and iPhone financial data synched *without* requiring a web application. And please, if it's in the works, let us know. I hate my Treo 755p so much that I may switch to an iPhone anyway, and then you've lost me as a customer. If I do go to the iPhone, I'll switch to another financial software such as SplashMoney.

I have to agree fully. I have both an iPhone (personal) and a blackberry (work) and it is frustrating that I cannot have a true synchronization capability with Quicken using either device. I am tired of the myriad of products that claim to synch with Quicken only to find what they do is export QIF files which Quicken stopped supporting as an import format a few years ago (yes you can do a workaround using a Quicken cash account and then cut & paste the transactions into the appropriate account). I had a Treo with Pocket Quicken (by Landware) a few years ago and loved the seamless synchronization capabilities but Pocket Quicken only works on Palm OS and Windows Mobile.

Since the mobile device is very personal and unique to the needs of each user, I would rather see Intuit put its development dollars toward making a universal desktop synchronization capability that would allow developers of blackberry, iphone, windows mobile, palm os, and other mobile OS apps build tools that can sync to the desktop quicken. I think such a conduit would ENHANCE sales of the desktop product much as the standardized banking interface allowed most financial institutions to offer download services.

I think Intuit made a good attempt at meeting the needs of people who prefer an online capability through quicken online but they never created a synch capability to the desktop system. So if you enter transactions on the online site or categorize expenses there is no easy way to get those same items into the desktop version. I experimented with this service for a while but grew frustrated because wireless data coverage is still not ubiquitous enough to allow me to ALWAYS enter my transactions at the point of sale. This is another example of where a universal synchronization capability would allow for users of Mint, Wesabe, or Quicken Online, etc to continue using Quicken desktop as their primary financial tool but have the ability to leverage these other services for their unique needs.

While I have been a loyal Quicken user for 10 years at this point I am ready to switch my desktop financial software to any application developer than can support and work seamlessly with a much more open approach to the wide array of exciting tools and devices that can help me manage my money. Quicken has an opportunity to continue its leadership in this area but I wonder it has the commitment to do so. The last couple of years have not been encouraging.

I am just another voice in the sea of the masses that is unequivocally assimilated into the collective here!! Catchy eh? hehe. I WONT switch to the iPhone for the same reasons. A pocket quicken solution is ALL the keeps me from buying an iPhone. I even bought my 18 yr old an iPhone and not myself. I am a HUGE apple user in general, an ER doc by trade and everything I need and currently use is NOW available for the iPhone except a pocket quicken solution. I use Agendas from iambic and they are developing. Landware is missing the boat if they dont jump on this and QUICK! I have directly emailed them asking IF they plan to develop or if so then WHEN do they plan too. I JUST registered here so I do not know the audience but if there are eyes and ears that matter...here I am as another similar voice. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out it is needed, and FAST!

Like most of my fellow posters I have a decade or more with Quicken and I prefer not to change to a product that I can not control. In short, there are two things that I will never willingly put on the internet: 1} my medical records and 2) my financial records. My current implementation consists of a Treo 680 with Pocket Quicken and Quicken on my iMac. My files goes back to 1993.

I want to move to the iPhone but the lack of an acceptable Quicken solution is a deal killer.

I am hopeful that Quicken/Intuit will respond to customer outcry as they did with TurboTax when they relented by allowing multiple e-files and multiple prints.

Let this be our Coca Cola Classic moment.

Got you all beat -- the first application I actually paid for on my Apple //e was Quicken 1.0 on a 5 1/4 inch floppy. So, yes, I've been a Quicken user for a LONG time.

That said, here is why I have spent part of the day looking for new financial management software:

    • Removal of online Web Entry. If I'm sitting at a computer with web access, I like being able to enter things and download them later into the desktop version. AND, my wife can also enter her items the same way, thus cutting down on my data entry.

    • Removal of online home page synced with desktop version (showing all accounts, not just investments). I want an online one-stop-shop for all my financial activities, without having to fire up the desktop software -- especially if I'm not at my home computer.

    • Lack of Pocket Quicken for the iPhone. The deal-breaker for me, for the same reasons noted above. The ONE electronic device I always have with me is my cell phone. I have used Pocket Quicken since it came out, and the ability to enter expenditures as they occur, and check balances and budgets on the fly, is the reason portable electronics were invented.
All of these put together means one simple conclusion -- the first vendor that combines an iPhone data-entry tool with a primary desktop application and a web-based partner to the desktop is going to get all of my business, and the business of thousands of others.

I will continue to look until I find such a product.

    HI,

I was wondering when will we see an iPhone native quicken app, just like the pocketquicken versions for Palm, Symbian and PocketPC? One that would synchronize with our quicken apps in our laptops and not quicken online. You see while quicken online solves many problems for US users, the rest of the world that is getting the iPhone waits for a solution to our transition problem, where the finance have been left a side. We really need a native app. Just like pocketquicken but for the iPhone. Please give us hope. Thanks.

Totally agreed. I am somewhat surprised there are not MORE users who need the features that are mentioned in this thread. Generally, Intuit seems to put a lot of effort into enhancements that are not useful to the typical user. I have upgraded only 3 times in 10+ years because the features they develop do not meet my needs. I look forward to a time where Intuit actually listens to their users. To that end, I subscribed to the community for the first time today. Hope it helps!

KyleKoehler, you have really hit the mark with describing exactly how I feel about needing a pocket quicken like app for platforms other than windows mobile or Palm. Palm was a decent OS, but they are history. I currently use windows mobile 6 only because is can run pocket quicken. Windows mobile is such a horrible OS that I would love to buy a blackberry or iphone. The first platform to get pocket quicken (not this web based quicken) will get my business.

INTUIT, PLEASE GET A MOBILE VERSION THAT IS JUST LIKE POCKET QUICKEN FOR iphone AND Blackberry! QUICKEN IS THE APPLICATION THAT I USE TO MANAGE MY FINANCES. POCKET QUICKEN IS THE TOOL THAT I USE TO ENTER THE DATA AND MONITOR MY BALANCES AND BUDGET!

I also have been using Quicken for over a decade, and probably wouldn't have been able to organize myself to allow me to buy my house without it. Until PQ I would stuff my receipts into my pocket and hope I remembered to enter them when I got home (and not send them through the wash). PQ on my Palm was a HUGE improvement and made my financial life much easier and more efficient.

I recently bought an iPhone to combine the devices I use most (mobile phone, Palm Pilot, iPod, GPS, and digital voice recorder) into one unit. I REALLY don't want to go back to stuffing potentially important receipts into my pockets again. If that means I have to stop using Quicken and use a product from company that is more responsive to my (our) needs, then so be it!

Is anyone at Intuit Inc. listening?

I spoke to Landware, as they are the entity that actually developed Pocket Quicken. It would be VERY simple for THEM to do the development utilizing the new SDK. Intuit is not directly responsible for the development. Apparently though, IF there is resistance to this development, it may well be from within Intuit. I expressed the vehement backing by all of us who feel the overwhelming importance to have a product such as this for the iPhone so that we can make the switch. Continue to push forward with our concerns and desire. If there IS a reason intuit or anyone else is "blocking" this development, let's get to the bottom of it so at the very least we understand WHY that's the case. Again, this is a MUCH needed product and Landware I believe could easily produce it.

It seems someone is watching - the post about pocketmoney got removed. Very frustrating that a product like pocketmoney exists, and is so close to being what a lot of us envision, but it's not quite there (I can't find a way to sync entries made on the mobile unit to the desktop - only the other way works).

I too agree. I have used Quicken for a very long time and Pocket Quicken on my old Palm device. Pocket Quicken was great. I also like the online entry form that connected to my desktop application. The key is to be able to enter data while not at my home PC but on a device (iPhone or Palm PRE) and then sync the two.

What gives? Quicken seems to be taking steps backwards, not forwards with their development.

Wow...I thought I was the only one pestering Pocket Quicken to port that app to the iPhone ;-)

It is a gaping hole in making Quicken "usable" in a mobile environment.

iBank has a lot of sizzle [glitzy interface] but is terribly slow...almost 12 minutes to open the file.

They do have a free web based application to sync mobile transaction back to the desktop application and vice versa.

They are also in the process of developing a stand alone iPhone app but here's my thoughts; I have been a Quicken user since the days it was available on an Apple IIgs. I converted to Quicken for Mac and have had the same data file since 1993/94 time frame.

I'm used to the keyboard shortcuts, the ease of printing checks and reconciling accounts.

I'm too old to relearn a new interface at this point [although I am experimenting]

Quicken put the push on to get Pocket Quicken to the iPhone/Blackberry and you'll have a lot of loyal followers plunking down the dough to make it worthwhile.

    I'll join in.

I am an iPhone user. Quicken for the iPhone that synchs with my desktop would be REALLY coool. It would be especially wonderful if I could use the iPhone to keep multiple PCs up to date.

I just downloaded an app for CitiBank which will let me maintain my accounts from the phone without the ability to change or add payees, accounts, etc. This is good. I don't want someone to be able to pay themselves should I lose my phone.

Perhaps a Quicken iPhone app that would synch automatically between the desktop and the iPhone through something like mobile.me.com would be worth waiting for.

There are times when the internet is down, bills need to be paid and the only way to get it down is from my desktop, printing checks and dropping them in the mailbox. A web based only Quicken/iPhone platform will not work for me.

I agree with soundguy69, an app that syncs with quicken on the desktop computer is essential. I use Pocket Quicken for the Treo Palm version and it does this wonderfully. I use it mostly when I make bank deposits (sometimes 8-10 at a time) so I don't have to save the deposit slip and go back and manually enter into Quicken. It allows multiple accounts (bank, c'card, etc.), remembers transactions so you don't have to reenter everything. I'm not being critical of Apple, but there are a lot of apps and functions that I've taken for granted on my Treo for years. By the way, I love my iTouch, that's why I was looking into this app.

Palm was a decent OS, but they are history. Have you looked at the Palm Pre demos?

To my mind, the Palm OS, with all its signs of aging is still hands down the easiest smartphone OS to use on a daily basis, and the new WebOS for Palm Pre clearly beats the pants off of the iPhone... and I'm saying that as a general fanatic of Apple's products.

And as far as I can tell from what I'm seeing online, the WebOS will be supporting old Palm OS apps, which means Pocket Quicken.

The best of both worlds in my opinion.

Now if only I could find 500 dollars!

And as far as I can tell from what I'm seeing online, the WebOS will be supporting old Palm OS apps, which means Pocket Quicken.
While WebOS will probably run Pocket Quicken via the Classic emulator, you won't be able to sync with the desktop, at least not in the initial release of the Classic environment.

"Q: Is there a HotSync support in Classic?

A: Unfortunately, not in the first release. HotSync and conduits are some of the most requested features we have received requests for so far and we are looking into various ways for solving this problem, but there are some serious technical and other obstacles for adding HotSync support to Classic."

Completely agree with KyleKoehler... just create a Quicken for the iPhone... a Quicken like the Pocket Quicken I've been using for YEARS! I would pay the price without batting an eye! I have too many years of data and too much wonderful experience with the Pocket Quicken. Fantastic!
