I was very excited that the Goals could be edited to essentially make a simple budget. However, I have only 5 months of data in Quicken Online, although there is 18 months available from my bank. Since both my husband and I have lost jobs since March, and I received an inheritance from my mother's estate, my monthly goals are ver different from the average spent over the past three months. I have tried to adjust the overall monthly goal and the monthly goals for individual items I am tracking. I entered $3454 in goals for specific items, but QuickenOnline changed my overall goal to 16,536 and then redid the individual goals, setting a goal for "cash" of !4,00 and some. This is crazy! What is it trying to do that results in such crazy numbers?
Why is Goals changing the overall goal and watched items if I edit items? Aug 12, 2009 03:39 pm
This post is about: Quicken Online
This is not an answer, just an observation. I deleted all my watched items for August and then added categories one at a time. The overall goal was being computed based on the individual goals I was adding, until I got to cash. I added cash, and QuickenOnline redrew the page and changed my overall goal for the month to $16000+ and the cash item to $14000+ Clearly there is something wrong here. I edit cash to be $200 and the crazy numbers disappeared and my overall goal again became the sum of all of the individual items. I would love to see if anyone else can reproduce this. Cash was where it all went crazy per my original question above.
I just tried reproducing what you described, but I didn't see the problem.
Did you have a large amount of cash withdrawals during the previous three months -- enough so that the average over those three months would be 14,000?
If so, then I think the default Cash goal would be set to that amount, and it would be included in the Overall Goal amount to increase it, too.
If that cash amount doesn't seem right, you might check to see if we categorized transactions incorrectly as Cash in the past three months.
I am having the same problem. I change individual category goals to what I want to budget and save the change. When I navigate away from the goals page and come back, all the numbers have reverted to the previous category budget numbers. It makes the bufdget are completely usless without correcting the budget goals each time I go on that page. This desperately needs a fix.
I just checked with one of our QA people. He suggested that there may be cases where we store your new data, but temporarily pull old data from our database and show it to you by mistake.
He wanted to know if you could try signing out and signing back in to see if you still see your old data.
I only signed up for Quicken Online two days before I tried to set goals and had this problem. By old do you mean cached by the browser or old as in from a past use of Quicken Online? I have never used Quicken Online before last week. I am a former user of Microsoft Money.
I should have said that my last post (about the old data) was mainly directed to CowboyCO.
But if you didn't have large cash expenditures in the previous 3 months, maybe you're affected by this bug, too.
By old data I meant the data that was visible right before you changed it. (We do generate a default set of goals for each new user based on the data we find in the transaction history.)
Anyway, please let us know if signing out and signing back in resurrects the data that you entered.

Have exact same problem! I sign in, change the goals (and hit save after editing). then when I sign out and sign back in - it's ALL GONE! very frustrating because am actually trying to change my spending habits. I don't want to match previous spending trends. I want to spend less.
