believe 10%of your income should be put. There is a cool pie chart on oprah websie under the finance section.

It depends on your financial situation.

If you have zero savings now put as much as you can away until you have at least $1000 for emergencies.

Then you could put aside 5%-10% of your income per month aside until you have built up 3-6 months of you average monthly expenses.

Once you have that you can work on other long-term savings like retirement, college fund, etc.
