After keyword searching "duplicate transactions" in the Quicken Online forum, it's clear that having duplicates of the same transaction...sometimes 2 or 3 or 4 of the same transaction....is a common problem that was identified many months ago. It's certainly something that my wife and I struggle with, having to go through our Bank of America (checking & credit card) and Fidelity (ATM/debit card) accounts.
On an ongoing basis, we're forced to review these and other accounts, sort by dollar amount, and individually delete duplicated transactions. From what I've seen, this is the only "fix" that the Quicken Online team has put forward, and if that's the case it's really not acceptable.
As to cause...I can only speculate that transactions that are in a "pending" status (e.g., payroll deposits the night before they are actually available) might create duplicates if QO can't distinguish between a pending and finalized ACH deposit.
Or in the case of credit cards, the act of creating the "authorization" for a charge, then followed by the actual charging of the card, might also be creating duplicates.
This is fairly simple stuff--problems that the Intuit engineering team has already identified and solved under other Quicken platforms.
It's an issue that negatively impacts our desire to recommend QO to others--I know such "net promoter" scores are an important customer satisfaction metric for Intuit.
We can't recommend Quicken Online because this issue create extra effort and hassle for users who have to look for duplicates, AND it leads to balance mismatch's between the actual bank or credit card balance and the one shown in Quicken Online that are impacted by duplicate transactions.
And we won't even get into those users who haven't noticed the duplicates and are trying to figure out why their balances don't match. They're not recommending QO....they are leaving.
With respect, I think that fixing this sort of basic functionality goes to the heart of product credibility and our ability to rave about it to our family and friends. We WANT to be net promoters....but the duplicates are a real deal breaker.
If its any help I got a whole slew of duplicates today 10/6/09. I had logged in to check something then logged back in a few minutes later (around 18:00 PST) and I had about $2000 more. This was because several deposits to my checking account had doubled. Several purchases doubled too. The new purchase entries have more info attached to them for example:
1st: 10/02/09 Macy's -- $24.53
2nd: 10/02/09 Macy's (plus lots of numbers) -- $24.53
These duplicate transactions range back to months ago. Cleaning up all that would take many hours...

Just a followup--I wrote to QO support about this problem--they requested that I send them a screen shot to further diagnose. Really? What is a screenshot going to help? All of my Bank of America charges are now showing up as duplicates, and it's obviously a problem lots of people are having.
In the meantime, I stumbled across mint.com, which looks very similar to QO, except that it has better categorization, more info (gives me my latest interest rate and available credit for each card), more trends graphing ability, more accounts that I can input (allows me to input my car loans and mortgage acct), and generally a better interface.
I think this latest issue of duplication may have caused QO to lose me as a customer.

I started using QuickenOnline about a year ago, but I have not really used it within the last 5 months. Upon logging in today and cleaning up the accounts/categories, I noticed that almost all my BofA transactions have been duplicated... as far back as May of this year (which was around the time I stopped using it frequently), perhaps even earlier. This was strange to me because I never had a problem with this before. Instead of keeping my finances easier to track, it's making it harder; while my balance on the home/account page is accurate, when I go into "Trends" the totals are NOT accurate.. as they count the duplicate transactions, so that is of no use to me. I really hope they have a fix for this soon as I need to get all this straightened out as soon as possible. Thanks.
What's really interesting to me is that it seems that a ton of people are having a problem with duplicate BOA charges, yet a week after it started showing up, there's still been no action by QO.
It's pretty moot for me at this point though--I now have everything transferred to Mint.com, which I like a lot better. I'll probably cancel my QO later this week. Anyone else have any experience with other sites?

Just want to officially join the group of frustrated Bank of America account holders getting duplicate entries. If this happens again, I will leave quicken online. The hassle definitely outweighs any quicken online benefits.
I am still getting duplications, but not as often. I contacted support and they NEVER got back to me.
clemmon74- I was thinking of switching to mint.com as well... but upon loggin in this forum today I noticed that it said "Mint.com/Quicken Online".. Did they merge? I will be really disappointed if I switch to mint only to find the same problem due to the merging... have you experienced anything different?

Does anyone from QUICKEN read these forums? I have the same issue as all these gentlefolks here - I have Fidelity so i fall in the same bucket as many of you. I was hoping that someone from QUICKEN would have taken notice and solved the issue by now - I guess not!!!
I find it interesting that you want to know "what banks are CAUSING" this issue, implying that no way could it be Quicken's fault. OK, well, let me say you are not interpreting Fidelity's transactions correctly - when I have 2 transactions, and then a total, Quicken counts that as 3 transactions. Uh, sorry Quicken team, that's YOUR fault, and based on so many here with the same problem, you may want to fix it soon lest Quicken's reputation may diminish into "you get what you pay for....."

I'm having this problem with many of my accounts. I would be nice if Quicken had the ability for the users to specify an opening balance and then displayed on the side a running balance for each account. If I'm in the transaction tab and specify on account i would like the ability to see a running balance to make sure I can account for all of the transactions. I've lost faith that my transaction roll-up to the account totals.
I am having Duplicate Transactions with Eastwood Bank. This has mainly been with POS Debit cards, but has now done it with the automatic Deposit of my paycheck.

Just chiming in that this is SOooooooo annoying. This thread was created well over a year ago in Oct '08 and there still doesn't seem to be resolution to the duplication issues. I keep checking back every couple months just to be disappointed.
The band aid solution to select a transaction then scroll up next to the Cleared Transactions and hit Delete is in the least a temporary fix and it doesn't seem to effect your overall balance anymore by actually performing this deletion so, for anyone looking for a quick fix that's it. Though, it's still very annoying to have to scan through all the transactions constantly to resolve this manually :(.
My wife is pulling her hair out because she switched from Microsoft Money, where duplicates were NOT a problem and is being driven insane by them now. Microsoft Money used to highlight any suspected duplicates and as what you wanted to keep. Now the crap Quicken program doesn't even detect a duplicate transaction when the check number and total are the same. Seems like Quicken can't get their act together. We'll be switching too, maybe Mint.com.

It's now almost a year and a half since Mark posted this message. I am still having problems with this. Mostly with check transactions. Today, I looked at my "trends" and noticed an incorrect amount for a category. Then, I went back to the transactions tab and found about 20 checks that had been duplicated...
I know this is a free product, but I use Turbo Tax and have bought other Quicken products in the past. So, I am trying to be patient. I would gladly pay a small monthly fee for a good online product if it would help QOL iron out these persistent glitches.
I should also point out that the duplicate transactions are not always true duplicates.
What happened today: I had only 1 complete duplicate check transaction. The others were duplicate check numbers but the Payees and amounts were different. So, I had to go back to my files and confirm what the true Payee and amount was for check #1234 (for example).
